Summer Maintenance Checklist for John Deere Equipment
Jay Wenger • July 1, 2025

North Dakota summers bring heat, dust, and long days in the field. For growers and landowners who rely on their John Deere equipment, preventative maintenance is the key to avoiding costly breakdowns and lost time during the peak of the season.

Whether you’re managing row crops near Devils Lake or tackling property work in Carrington, this summer maintenance checklist will help you keep your John Deere equipment like tractors, combines, and Gator Utility Vehicles running at their best.

John Deere Summer Maintenance Checklist

1. Inspect and Flush the Cooling System

North Dakota heat can be unforgiving. A clean, functioning cooling system helps your engine stay in the safe zone.

  • Check coolant levels and top off with a John Deere-approved coolant
  • Look for hose cracks, leaks, or soft spots

If it’s been over two years, a full flush and refill can help prevent overheating. The knowledgeable Leading Edge Service Team is always here to help you make calls like this and address the issue.

2. Monitor Tire Pressure and Tread

Fluctuating temps mean fluctuating tire pressure. Uneven or under-inflated tires can lead to poor traction and added wear.

  • Check PSI regularly (refer to your operator’s manual)
  • Inspect tires for cracks or excessive wear
  • Replace if sidewalls are worn or tread is thinning

3. Replace or Clean Air Filters

Dust from gravel roads and dry fields can choke performance.

  • Remove and inspect both cab and engine air filters
  • Replace if filters appear clogged or discolored
  • Avoid blowing them out with compressed air. This can damage filter media and let in fine dust.

4. Check Engine Oil and Hydraulic Fluids

Dirty or low oil can cause major engine damage, especially under high summer loads.

  • Check engine oil levels daily
  • Replace filters on schedule
  • Inspect for hydraulic leaks around hoses and fittings

5. Inspect Belts, Batteries, and Blades

Summer stress can expose weak components.

  • Clean battery terminals and test voltage - especially if your machine sat idle over winter.
  • Tighten or replace worn belts
  • Sharpen mower or cutter blades for clean cuts
